I will be honest, the first place I go before I begin is to Wikipedia. It’s a bad habit I picked up in college (though I never used Wiki for my papers…) Now, I look up the relevant months for each message – I find it fascinating to see all of the holidays or events. For example, December 10 is when the Nobel Prizes are awarded, the date of Alfred Nobel’s death. December 10 is also Human Rights Day. Apparently, “Monkey Day” is growing popularity, and “celebrated” on December 14. (Where else would you find that there was a “Monkey Day”?) More importantly, December 15 is Bill of Rights day to recognize the day (December 15, 1791) the Bill of Rights were ratified. And, of course, Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa, are also in December. While some of these are useless facts, I think it’s important to be aware of events outside of our bubble. Long story short, Wikipedia provides my initial inspiration for each of the newsletter messages. So, where do you get your inspiration when you have writer’s block?
We hope you will be joining us for the KCBA/KCPA Holiday Luncheon at the Bakersfield Petroleum Club. You can RSVP at http://kernbar.com/cde.cfm?event=397673. Make sure you RSVP! Opportunity drawing tickets are also available from any of your Board Members at Klein, DeNatale, Goldner, Cooper, Rosenlieb & Kimball, Wood & Randall, Law Office of Ed Thomas, Chain | Cohn, GBLA, Young Wooldridge, and County Counsel. Tickets will also be available at the luncheon. The ticket sales benefit Bakersfield Christmas for Seniors and CASA. Additionally, we will be collecting unwrapped toys for the Jamison Center.
We are excited to announce that we have created a Relay for Life team for the May 4-5, 2013 Relay for Life of Bakersfield. Many people in our lives have been touched, one way or another, by cancer. Both of my parents have had cancer, my mom is a survivor and my dad was taken by it. The American Cancer Society’s goal is to celebrate more birthdays through fundraising to support their research efforts. If you’re interested in being a part of KCPA’s Relay for Life team, our team page is http://main.acsevents.org/goto/KCPA.
As a great way to begin the year, mark your calendars for our January MCLE luncheon! We will be offering 1 hour of ethics credit at our January 10, 2013 luncheon. (Topic and speaker to be announced.)
We’d like to welcome back Nancy Boles! Nancy has agreed to take the Programs Director position for the remaining 2012-2013 year. Please notate this change when RSVPing to upcoming luncheons.
Lastly, for those of you who were not at our last luncheon or who missed my e-mail, due to the time commitment and each of our limited abilities to perform all the duties necessary as President, the Board has voted to appoint Amber Brewer as the President and me as the Chair of the Board. Amber will be handling the luncheons and I will be handling the “behind-the-scenes” action (i.e., Board meetings, the President’s Message, etc.). As we both love the association and what to see the association serve our members in the best possible way, we believe this is the most effective we to do so. If you have any questions, please contact either Amber or myself. We truly appreciate all of the support we’ve gotten and thank each of you for your understanding.
We hope each of you survive the craziness of the holiday season and have a wonderful holiday!
