February President’s Message

Has anyone else noticed that the weather is like Fall right now?  I was noticing all of the leaves on the ground while walking my mutt this past weekend – it does not seem like it’s the last month of Winter at all! Don’t get me wrong, I love this weather, but what is going on?  I’m not a Bakersfield native, so I am still getting used to this crazy weather after almost 5 years.  I’m used to real weather; not being able to leave my window open all night!  I hope everyone else is enjoying this weather as much as I am!  We shall see on Groundhog’s Day on whether we get two more weeks of this lovely weather (and hopefully some more rain).

Don’t forget to wear red on February 1!  The first Friday of February is National Wear Red Day® as a way to bring awareness to heart disease and to remind women of the need to protect their heart health, which is important for those of us with stressful jobs.  (®National Wear Red Day is a registered trademark of HHS and AHA.)  According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, heart disease is the “#1 killer of women” and is largely preventable.

We hope you’ll be our Valentine and join us for our next luncheon on February 14 at 12:00 p.m. at the Four Points Sheraton – Summit Room.  Jerry Pearson will be speaking on Critical Issues in California Employment Law in 2013.   (Please note that the location change is just for the February luncheon.  Our MCLE luncheons will resume at the Petroleum Club, beginning with the March 14, 2013 luncheon.)

Additionally, the February Community Affair is collecting books for the Bakersfield SPCA.  Please bring all those books you won’t read again (or that you have as an e-book) to help raise money for this local organization!  Books can be brought to the luncheon or to Starlene Parson at GBLA.

We are, again, looking at printing that cookbook!  Please submit any recipes you’d like to include to me at makalacoleman@gmail.com.  We’ll have more news regarding the cookbooks in the near future.  Additionally, please let me know if you’d be more interested in a hardcopy or an e-book copy.

We’re only a few months away from the Bakersfield Relay for Life event!  The Bakersfield Relay for Life will be held at Wingspot – Corner of Merle Haggard Drive and Airport Drive on May 4, 2013, beginning at 9:00 a.m.  Our current goal is to raise a total of $1,000 as a team to donate to Relay for Life.  If you’d like to sign up to be a part of our team, you can sign up online at http://main.acsevents.org/goto/KCPA, and select “JOIN OUR TEAM,” and share why Relay for Life is important to you, or you can “DONATE NOW.”  Beginning at the February meeting, we will have a Relay for Life jar at the sign in table for any cash or check donations.

As a gentle reminder, June 22, 2013 is the 25th Annual CAPA Educational Conference in Los Angeles, California.  This is going to be a large event and a huge celebration for CAPA so make sure to mark your calendars now and RSVP!  We look forward to seeing each of you there.

Lastly, if you’re interested in serving on the 2013-2014 Board of Directors of KCPA, please contact Jannett Coats and indicate which position you are interested in.  If you would like any additional information regarding the duties for each position, please contact either Jannett, Amber Brewer, or me for further information.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
