April President’s Message

April is here! We’ve been gearing up for two trials, so it’s be hectic—but that’s what we do, right?  No complaints.  I’ve learned a lot the last couple of months and love staying busy. How has the first quarter of the year treated you so far?  Can you believe that we’re already into the fourth month of 2014?!

Some dates to remember in April:

  • Tuesday, April 15 is Tax Day
  • Tuesday, April 22 is Earth Day
  • Wednesday, April 23 is Administrative Professionals Day

April is also the National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

How can you help with Earth Day and National Child Abuse Prevention Month?  “Recycle” your old cell phones that you no longer use by donating them at our April luncheon to the Alliance Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault.  The Alliance Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault (AAFVSA) is a nonprofit organization that is committed to stop domestic violence and sexual assault in Kern County. AAFVSA also assists those who suffer from domestic violence and sexual assault reclaim their lives. They help men, women and children within our community.

First, I’d like to remind you that the Kern County Superior Court converted the Attorney Late Line to an electronic format as of March 3, 2014.  If your attorney is going to be late to court, you can go online and notify the court rather than calling in.  The telephone number was disconnected as of March 14, 2014.  Please see page 11 for the notice from KCSC regarding the late line, which includes instructions on how to use the automated system.

Second, there are new proposed Local Rules of Court available for review and comment.  Any comments need to be received by May 1, 2014.  Please see page 9 to view the proposed revised Local Rules and the instructions on how to many any comments.

Lastly, the KCSC counters and telephone hours will be changing as follows:

  • Monday through Thursday:
         8:00 a.m.—4:00 p.m. and
  • Friday:
         8:00 a.m.—12:00 p.m. (noon).

This change will be effective April 7, 2014.

Registration for the June Conference will be opening soon; please check out page 6 to see the tracks being offered.  The San Diego Paralegal Association (SDPA) has done a great job organizing the event and speakers.  We hope to see you there!
