November has arrived and Thanksgiving is on my mind. Because it’s been quite a while since elementary school, I needed to refresh my memory on the history of Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving has been celebrated in the United States since its inception in 1621, when the newly arrived Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians gathered at Plymouth Rock. From what I’ve read, it was a three day celebration that had a menu that may or may not have included turkey. I don’t know what your traditions are for this holiday but I hope that it is a time for you to get together with those that you love and give thanks for the time that you have together.
This year, I have a lot to be thankful for. My fourth grandchild was born in March and my youngest son married his long-time girlfriend (a paralegal) in April. In July, I celebrated 28 years of marriage to my husband, Dwayne. I have three friends who are recovering from throat cancer and one who is recovering from breast cancer. I am blessed to celebrate my ninth year at KDG and to work with wonderful people, many of who I consider family.
At our last general meeting, I mentioned to those in attendance that it is my hope that KCPA provides an avenue for those of us involved in the legal profession to network with each other, as well as obtain our continuing education. We have a diverse membership and it is my belief that we will benefit from getting to know each other a little more than to just say hello at meetings. With that in mind, I will try to sit with different people at each meeting and I hope that you consider doing the same.
The KCBA/KCPA Holiday Luncheon is coming up on December 5th, at the Petroleum Club. This year, we are offering an early bird $35 registration through the close of business on November 18th. November 19th the cost increases to $50 per person.
If you are able, please bring an unwrapped toy to the Holiday Luncheon for those children living at the Jamison Children’s center who would love to receive a gift on Christmas. As usual, we will have a raffle, the proceeds of which will benefit the KCBA Charitable Foundation and Bakersfield Christmas for Seniors.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and be blessed.
