February President’s Message

February brings a number of events to mind. First, every February 2nd is Groundhog Day. I don’t know if the groundhog will or won’t see his shadow. With the water situation in California, I hope that the groundhog does NOT see his shadow and that we will enjoy another 6 weeks of winter. All of the attorneys in our midst, whose practice area is water, will probably benefit either way.

The second day worth remembering in February is celebrated on February 14 and is commonly known as Valentine’s Day. According to Wikipedia, the day first became associated with romantic love in the 14th century and grew to expressions of love through the presentation of flowers, confections and greeting cards in the 18th century. This is probably what prompted Hallmark to be founded in 1910.

The third day of interest in February is National Random Acts of Kindness Day which is observed on February 17th. This is certainly one of my favorite days and has grown in popularity across the world. There are many ways to show kindness to others – from simply a smile or asking a friend to lunch to donating your time to a worthy cause such as GBLA. Recently, I saw a story online about a coffee shop that accepts “reserve” or “suspended” coffees. The idea is simple. When ordering your coffee, you can pay for a reserve coffee. Eventually a homeless person can claim the reserve coffee. I saw another similar story of a pizza restaurant on the east coast taking payment ahead for a slice of pizza. No matter what you chose to do it is my hope that you give kindness away on February 17 or any day. I hope that it becomes a habit.

I close with this quote from Mark Twain “Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.”
