September President’s Message

In June, KCPA installed the board for the 2019/20 term, awarded the Jeannie D. Conner Memorial Scholarship to Sissy Rucker, and honored Makala Reha as the 2018/19 Paralegal of the Year. Thank you to the Kern County Bar Association for the beautiful flowers it provided to the outgoing and incoming Board members, and to KCBA Vice President, Joe Hughes, for his kind words about paralegals and Ms. Reha, who started out years ago working for him as a legal secretary.

In July, the newly installed Board, together with outgoing Board member, Sissy Rucker, met to plan our upcoming year. We decided to add another annual scholarship for someone who would like to attend the annual conference sponsored by the California Alliance of Paralegal Associations. It is our hope that more of your Board members and you attend this conference, which is held somewhere in the state of California during the month of June. The CAPA Conference always provides three learning tracks as well as some general MCLE credit. It’s a great “bang for your buck”, and we hope to have a large contingent from KCPA at the June 2020 conference.

KCPA will add a member spotlight area to our newsletter and will soon be delivering a questionnaire to each of our members so that they can let us know a little bit about their practice and life outside of work. Please take a little bit of time and complete and return the member spotlight so that we can feature a few of you each month. A picture would also be welcome (hint, hint) so that we can put names and faces together.

We again will partner together with the Kern County Bar Association to host the annual Holiday Luncheon. This year’s luncheon will once again return to The Petroleum Club. We will send out an announcement very soon as to the confirmed date and letting you know when to register for this fun event at the special early bird pricing. KCPA will raise money once again through the opportunity drawing for Christmas for Seniors of Kern County, while the KCBA will support its Charitable Foundation. As always, we will ask each of you to bring unwrapped gifts to be donated to the Jamison Center.

If you would like to help with the Holiday Luncheon, please contact me at We need assistance with obtaining donations for the opportunity drawing or on the day of the event with decorations, ticket sales, and distribution of drawing items.
