July President’s Message

In June, KCPA installed the board for the 2016/17 term, awarded the Jeannie D. Conner Memorial Scholarship to Michelle Clemans, and honored Hana Tarin as the 2015/16 Paralegal of the Year. Thank you to the Kern County Bar Association for the beautiful flowers it provided to the out-going and in-coming board members, and to KCBA president, Isaac St. Lawrence for his kind words about his appreciation of paralegals. Thank you also to the Honorable Susan Gill who issued the oath to the incoming board. And special thanks to Makala Reha, who served on the KCPA board for the past 6 years and the last 4 as president.

It’s hard to believe that July 2016, is already here. I trust that everyone had a wonderful Independence Day celebration. I am very proud to live in America and to have the liberties afforded to us as Americans. I am thankful for those brave men who wrote the Declaration of Independence in 1776. America is now 240 years old.

Did you know that KCPA is 28 years old? In looking through the past minutes, I discovered that our organization has held meetings in a number of locations throughout the years including The Hill House, Panda Palace, Bill Lee’s, The Bistro, Hodel’s, Cask ‘N Cleaver, Maitia’s, Chalet Basque, J.C. Scott’s, Great Castle, and The Rice Bowl just to name a few. I remember bringing bag lunches to meetings held at various law firms in the 90’s in order to save our members the cost of an expensive venue.

I also noted that KCPA was very active in our community and in providing pro bono services.

Specifically, we provided services to Teen Court. While Teen Court no longer exists, there are many opportunities out there for us to serve and to show Kern County how effective paralegals are. I challenge each of our members to consider the gift of your time for the benefit of others and will outline areas in need of assistance in future newsletters and general meetings.

Speaking of giving back, KCPA will be holding our annual member appreciation ethics MCLE this year on August 11, 2016, at noon, at Klein, DeNatale, Goldner. This means that members attend at no cost. Please look for your membership applications to be emailed to you and make sure that you return your applications before the end of the month so that you can participate in the MCLE at no cost. Non-members and attorneys will be charged the regular fee of $30.00.

Always,

Karen Clemans, C.B.A.

May President’s Message

A huge “thank you” to all of those who agreed to step up to be board members for the 2016-2017 KCPA Board. Truly, there would not be an association this coming year without you! I’m glad people are willing to step up to the plate when the Association is in need and other members need to focus on other priorities in their life.

We have some exciting things coming up prior to the end of the year. You should have received the nomination for Paralegal of the Year and we will announce the recipient at the June Installation & Awards luncheon. We will also be awarding the Jeannie D. Conner Scholarship at the luncheon. The application is included with the newsletter. Please return it to me by May 27 for consideration.

The CAPA Conference is scheduled for June 25, 2016 in Riverside, California at the Riverside Convention Center. For more information regarding the conference, including to register, please visit the https://www.caparalegal.org. Additionally, we have a free entry to the conference. If you would like to attend the conference, please send me a brief e-mail as to why you should be the recipient of the free entry by May 13, 2016. We will make the announcement by e-mail by May 20, 2016 if you are the recipient of the free entry. Note—this only includes the registration for the conference, this does not include the hotel or any additional travel.

We look forward to seeing you at the May 12, 2016 luncheon. Jay Rosenlieb, Esq., of Klein, DeNatale, Goldner, Cooper, Rosenlieb & Kimball, LLP, will be speaking on the Top Ten Truths of Employment Law. At the luncheon, we’ll be collecting canned/packaged food drive to benefit the Gleaner’s Senior Sack Program. (We will also be accepting cash/check donations for the purchase of canned and packaged food).

As this will be my final President’s Message, I’d like to say that it’s been my pleasure to serve on the Board since 2010. I’ve served in multiple capacities, starting as webmaster, then as secretary, and as CAPA representative and president for the past few years. I’ve truly enjoyed the experience I’ve gained, the people I’ve gotten to collaborate with, and the leadership skills I’ve gained by being a part of the Board. I can thank the infamous Nancy Boles for pulling me in, and although it wasn’t my first choice, you all know Nancy. She eventually got me in and it’s taken me five years to leave, but it’s time for me to depart so I can deal with some family and health issues that recently arose. I thank each of you for your patience with my lack of confidence in public speaking (I can now do it without feeling sick!), and the hiccups we’ve had along the way.; it might have been a bumpy ride, but it’s never fun if it’s a straight shot! For those of you who have considered serving on the Board, I would truly recommend it. It was a fabulous experience.

I hope you have a wonderful May, and I hope to see you around at the luncheons!

~Makala E. Reha

April President’s Message

Happy Spring all Members!

We have some important announcements for April.

First, as many of you are aware, our fiscal year begins July. That means we have elections coming up and are looking for new members for our Board of Directors. We are currently looking for the following positions:

President—Must have served on the board for 2 years (does not need to be immediately preceding);

Vice President—Must have served on the board for 2 years (does not need to be immediately      preceding);

Programs—Must be regular member;

CAPA Primary and Secondary— Must be regular member;

Public Information Officer—Must be regular member; and

Student—Must be a student enrolled in a paralegal program.

I have served on the Board since 2010-2011 and have grown greatly from the experience. It can be challenging, but it is definitely an awarding experience. I have had many opportunities, including job opportunities, simply because of my role on the KCPA Board and CAPA Board. It is a great way to learn leadership skills if that is a skill set you are looking for. I strongly encourage you to consider becoming a part of the Board. If you have not served before, the PIO position would be great for you. If you enjoy public speaking or feel like you want to enhance your ability to speak in front of a small group, programs would be a great position (and we already have speakers lined up for the remaining months of 2016!). If you are interested in state issues regarding paralegals or the developments of the limited licensed legal technicians (LLLT), I would highly recommend joining as a CAPA Representative. If you are a past Board member that is not currently serving as part of the board, you are eligible as either President or Vice President as well. Any position you take on is highly rewarding and the Board is a great group to work with. I will not be returning for the 2016-2017 year because I believe it’s the time for others to contribute to the association. We cannot have fresh ideas without fresh faces!

Secondly, you will be receiving a survey from KCPA within the next two weeks. We’re trying to get some information from our members on their opinions regarding our meetings. Please respond to the survey; it’s a simple 10 question survey from Survey Monkey. Remember, this is YOUR association. We need your thoughts and opinions to guide where this association goes and how it operates.

As a reminder, for the month of April, KCPA is collecting cash and check donations to benefit the Alliance Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault to purchase underwear, bras, toiletries, personal hygiene products and blankets, sheets and towels for women and children of all ages. We will also be collecting used cell phones (but please remember to remove any personal data from cell phones prior to donating).

Our MCLE presentation will be given by Andrew Morgan of Borton Petrini, LLP, on Complex Construction Defect Litigation. Please RSVP no later than April 8, 2016.

Lastly, the schedule for the 2016 CAPA June Educational Conference has been posted. We have included the schedule in the Newsletter for your reference. They have a lot of really information presentations. I hope you sign up and join the fun of a CAPA Conference.

March President’s Message

Did everyone enjoy having the extra day in February? I know it sucked having that extra day be a Monday, but at least the start of March is off to a better start.

Have you had a chance to see the wildflowers and poppies on the hills between Bakersfield and Tehachapi, or from the 58 to Arvin?  In the years I’ve commuted from Tehachapi, I cannot remember ever seeing the hills so beautiful and orange. My husband took me through Arvin and those views are almost more impressive because the hills are a bright, deep orange. If you have some spare time, I would suggest taking a drive over the 58 to enjoy the wildflower while they are still blooming.

In preparation of spring cleaning, our March community affair event, KCPA will be collecting business clothes for the Life Training Program at the Bakersfield Rescue Mission next. Kristen Foster reports that the Mission has a new resale boutique near Mama Roombas and all the proceeds go to Mission at Kern County. Last year some of your donations were earmarked for the ritzy resale shop.

Do you like KCPA? Do you like hockey, or to support your local sports teams? Come join KCPA for a night with the Condors; KCPA will have a group at the March 19 Bakersfield Condors game. All are welcome, including your spouses and children. The information on how to purchase tickets is on page 13. We’d love to see you out there!

KCPA’s fiscal year ends at the end of June 2016, which means one thing—we’re looking for new board members. If you are interested in serving on the Board, please feel free to contact any of the current board members for details of their positions, or feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

I hope you have a wonderful March!

February President’s Message

When you see hearts all over the place in February, it’s not just about Valentine’s Day – February is also the nationally recognized American Heart Month. Now, I’m sure 99.9% of the time all the hearts you see in the stores is because of Valentine’s Day, but I wanted to remind you to be heart healthy! (Because you needed one more person to tell you, right?)  Why am I reminding you? Stress.  We all experience it, whether it’s because of work, personal life, school – we all have to remember to try to manage our stress, and, in turn, manage our heart health!  I know that working in the legal field can be very stressful, and the American Heart Association has some great tips on how to keep your heart healthy.

Now that we are a month in, how are you doing on your resolutions? I made three resolutions:

  1. Read at least 25 books;
  2. Complete at least 1 more APC; and
  3. Complete at least 12 5ks.

So far, I’ve completed 2 books (and I’m about 1/3 of the way through my third). I’ve started my APC, and I have signed up for 2 5ks (the first being January 23). I’ve began to wonder whether I set goals that were too reasonable, but at least they are attainable!

We have most of the year planned out for MCLEs! We will be welcoming Joe Hughes of Klein, DeNatale, Goldner, Cooper, Rosenlieb & Kimball, LLP, to speak on “An Unwelcome Valentine – Motions to Disqualify Under Rule of Professional Conduct 3-310” on February 11, 2016. Please RSVP with Sasha Gadberry no later than February 4, 2016.  Please remember, due to the switch to the Petroleum Club, any late RSVPs (as in any RSVPs after February 4 and walk-ins) are subject to a late RSVP fee.  This is unfortunately due to the amount of late RSVPs we were receiving and additional fees that Petroleum Club passed through.

In preparation of spring cleaning, our February Community Affairs event is a book and media drive for the SPCA’s book fair. If you have books and/or DVDs that you’d like to donate, please bring them to the luncheon on February 11, 2016.  If you have a large quantity of books to donate, I would urge you to contact Kristen Foster to possibly donate before or after the luncheon.

Lastly, as you know, KCPA’s fiscal year is from July 1 to June 30, which means that we are looking for new board members! If you are interested in joining the board, please contact Shontice Yates to let her know, or feel free to contact any of the board members to discuss what they do on a daily basis.  We’d love to have some fresh faces and new ideas on the board for the 2016-2017 year.

I hope you have a wonderful heart healthy February!

-Makala E. Reha
