January President’s Message

January of a new year is already upon us! This past year flew.

Have you made any New Years Resolutions? My husband and I signed up for a 2,016 miles in 2016 challenge wherein we have to run/walk a combined 2,016 mile throughout the year. I’ve been off to a slow start (he already has 20 some odd miles down and three half marathons booked for the year). I’ve also decided to go for at least one more APC this year (already sent the check in even!). Should be an exciting year.

If education is one of your resolutions, why not start studying for the CP exam this month? That would give plenty of time to take the test by the end of the year.

We are hoping to have another event for everyone the first part of this year. Details will follow as they become available.

To keep it short and sweet, here are my notes for this month:

  1. Make sure you sign up for the luncheon!
  2. Our community affair event this month is blankets for the homeless center. It’s a chilly year with El Nino; this would be a great and simple way to help out (especially with winter stuff already going on clearance!)
  3. KCPA is hosting the CAPA Board February 5—7 for its first meeting of the year. As such, we will also be having a social event Saturday, February 6, at the Bakersfield Condors game. If you are interested, please e-mail president@kcpaonline.org and capa@kcpaonline.org for further information.
  4. Make sure you mark your calendars for the CAPA June Educational Conference on June 25, 2016. The Educational Conference will be in Riverside, California at the Riverside Convention Center.

I hope everyone has an awesome January!

October President’s Message

Education Conference Co-chairs Trudy McQuiddy, CP and Michele T. Pfeiffer, CLA had a vision to encourage conference attendees to go after their goals. Their extraordinary efforts along with our northern California teams PASCCO, SFPA and SVPA made their vision a reality.

Were you one of the nearly 175 people that attended our 27th annual education conference in San Jose? It was a fantastic conference full of high quality education programs, networking, fun and more. A special thank you to PASCCO’s Nancy Logue and SFPA’s Christopher Zavrel for all of their hard work in making this year’s conference a success.

Our next exciting event this year is CAPA’s bi-annual leadership conference hosted by ICAP and SDPA on Saturday, November 7th. ICAP’s Connie Johnson and SDPA’s Julie Schwartz have planned a day that you do not want to miss, so be sure to join us for an exciting day of leadership training and advancement! Event and registration details will be posted on our website soon.

CAPA is dedicated to advancing our paralegal leaders. Under our own leadership development program where we strive to Grow Our Association Leaders

(GOAL) to expand your vision of yourself and the world around you, CAPA has provided webinar trainings on 5 Ways to be a Successful Leader, 7 Ways to Engage and Motivate Your Team, and, finally, our last GOAL webinar of the year, the Top 10 Tips for Association Management presented by NALA’s Professional Development Committee Chair, Jillian Sherman, ACP, on September 22nd. Make sure to register early to guarantee your spot: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/5402103303279440898. GOAL webinars are open to all CAPA members on a first come, first served basis.

We are nearing the end of 2015. Have you taken the time to take stock of your goals that you set in the beginning of the year? Are you on your way to achieving those goals? I hope so! It is important to have a vision for your career. There is a saying: where there is vision, there is life. What is your vision for yourself as a leader in the paralegal field and in your community? As leaders, and as the pioneer of leadership studies, Warren Bennis said, we must strive to “translate vision into reality.”

I look forward to seeing all of you in Riverside!

September President’s Message

September is finally upon us! I’m so thankful that the summer is over and cooler weather is upon us… let’s just hope there will be more days that are in the 90s, or lower throughout the remainder of summer.

As many of you know, we’ve been trying to plan several events throughout this year for you. The first is our bowling event (see page 21 for the flyer). Bring up to three family members and the lane and shoe rental is being provided by KCPA. We’d like for you to meet your Board as well as the KCPA Heart Walk team. We also have the Heart Walk team up and going and there is still time to sign up to participate for the October 17 walk/run. KCPA has raised $90 out of our $500 goal. If you would like to contribute toward KCPA’s team, but cannot run or walk on October 17, we are welcoming donations toward the team for the American Heart Association too. You can make donations and sign up here: http://bakersfieldheartwalk.kintera.org/faf/search/searchTeamPart.asp?ievent=1126433&lis=1&kntae1126433=8793D17546A9439D9483D6DCB07BF9AD&team=6428863&tlteam=6299572.

We’ve also created shirts for KCPA – you can either get it at no charge by joining KCPA’s Heart Walk team and raise $30, or you can purchase them for $15 and the profits are put toward KCPA’s Heart Walk team. If you’d like to purchase one, please select your size and make a check payable to “KCPA.” (The link to select your shirt size is: https://www.customink.com/g/csa0-00a7-kkvc).

We hope you’ve enjoyed the move to the Bakersfield Petroleum Club! Our next luncheon is September 10, 2015. Larry Peake, Esq., will be giving an ethics MCLE presentation. We’ll be collecting new and gently used clothing for the Stella Hills Elementary School, as well as accepting cash and check donations to go toward the purchase of clothing as our September Community Affairs Event.

The CAPA Leadership Conference will be hosted at the Riverside County Bar Association on November 7, 2015. Once we have the brochure with the details we will forward that information to you. If you are interested in learning new or additional leadership skills, I would highly recommend attending! I would highly recommend attending if you have an interest in joining KCPA as a Board member as well. I know they have some great presentations lined up and are currently putting all the information together.

We hope to see you at the September 10 luncheon and at our bowling event!

August President’s Message

August is already upon us. That came fast!

The Board had its retreat on last month and we have some exciting events coming up throughout the year that we hope you’ll be as excited about as we are. The first is Bowling with the Board and Meeting Your Team. We’ll be hosting a bowling event on September 26, 2015 at the Westchester Lanes in Bakersfield. We’ll be providing more details soon, so be on the look out! I bet you’re wondering what team it is you are supposed to be meeting… well, KCPA also have a team for the 2015 Bakersfield Heart & Stroke Walk and Lawyers Have Heart 5K Run at the CSU Bakersfield Amphitheater on October 17, 2015. You can register by going to BakersfieldHeartWalk.kintera.org and search for “Kern County Paralegal Association” as the team. (Please note that it is a team and not a company so you do need to search for it; it will not be one of the companies listed.) The link is also posted on Facebook and our website. There is no charge to participate in the Heart Walk (untimed), but all walkers who raise $100 will receive an official Heart Walk t-shirt. There is a $35.00 charge for the Lawyers Have Heart Run (timed). We hope you’ll join us! We have more events in the works for the end of this year and next year and we hope you’ll join us for what we have planned.

Please remember that our luncheons have changed to the Petroleum Club of Bakersfield beginning this month. We hope you’ll join us for Jeffrey Travis speaking on “Tiptoeing Through Minefields”: Ten things to do and not do during discovery in a family law proceeding on August 13, 2015. (I’ve seen the PowerPoint on this one—it’ll be entertaining!)

For our Community Affairs opportunity for August, KCPA is collecting cash donations to benefit The Kern County 999 Foundation, an organization whose mission is to recognize and honor Kern County’s fallen peace officers who gave their lives ‘In The Line of Duty’ serving the citizens of Kern County, and provide support to the family members left behind. (Please make checks payable to KCPA.) Donations will be accepted at our August luncheon, however, if you are not able to attend and would still like to donate, please contact Kristen Foster.

As a few reminders as we begin the new year:

1. Membership Applications are due. Please make sure to have them to Shontice Yates no later than September 15, 2015.

2. We have a great Board again this year, please let us know what you’d like to see from your association this year and we’ll see what we can make happen.

3. CAPA is celebrating 40 years next year. The 40 year anniversary present is a ruby—what are your ideas on a theme for the education conference next year? (Oh, and rubies are spread out throughout the newsletter. Cherri Jo Bassler won a $10 Panera gift card for June’s ladybug find. Can you find all the rubies? – E-mail me with how many you find!)

4. Stay Calm. Our hearts are important to us— and stress does not help, but in our profession, there is always some level of stress. In conjunction with our Heart Walk Team, here are Four Ways to Deal with Stress: www.heart.org/HEARTORG/GettingHealthy/StressManagement/FourWaystoDealWithStress/Four-Ways-to-Deal-with-Stress_UCM_307996_Article.jsp.

Stay Healthy and Stay Happy!

June President Message

As you are aware, KCPA runs on a fiscal year of July—June, so the end of our year has approached.  I wonder where the time has gone, though.  Wasn’t it just January?

We have an exciting June luncheon for you!  We’ll be announcing our Paralegal of the Year, Scholarship Recipient and CAPA  Conference Attendee.  We will also be honoring our Sustaining Members and outgoing Board members, and swearing in our 2015-2016 Board.

We also are excited to announce that we will be returning to the Bakersfield Petroleum Club for not only the June Installation and Awards luncheon, but also for the 2015-2016 term! Please remember to RSVP for the June luncheon no later than June 3. The Petroleum Club has stricter RSVP policies.  If we have too many late RSVPs, we will have to create a late RSVP rate, which we’d love to avoid.

For those of you who are able to attend the 2015 27th Annual CAPA Conference, they have added a Corporate Track—which I’m super excited about.  They have also gotten a reduced rate for two groups (6:15 p.m. and 6:45 p.m.) to tour the Winchester Mystery House.  If you haven’t signed up yet, I would highly recommend attending one of the CAPA Conferences.  It’s a great experience. Oh, and did I mention our very own Bobbie D. Miller, ACP, is one of the speakers in the Family Law track?  It’s not too late to register!  If you do, make sure you register as a “member” and that you indicate you are with KCPA. You can check out the website (www.caparalegal.org) for the brochure and how to register.

I’d like to say a huge Thank You to our outgoing Board members! Each of you have had an impact on how well our Board has ran and the programs we’ve been able to provide to our members. Can everyone agree that our Board is amazing??  A special thank you to Bobbie D. Miller, ACP, Vice President and CAPA Primary—she has been my rock and shoulder for my term as president.  Ms. Bobbie will not be returning to the Board next term and will be sorely missed.

I’d also like to say thank you for having me serve as your President for the past four years.  I’d love to hear any feedback you have that I can take back to the Board for our July 25, 2015 retreat.  Please provide me any comments no later than June 14 by e-mail (president@kcpaonline.org) so I can include it as discussion items with the Board.  Remember, we are here to serve you.

For those of you who read our newsletter each month, we’re going to test you.  We’ve placed an image of lady bug throughout the newsletter.  If you can locate each ladybug, you’ll be entered into a drawing for a gift card to be presented at the June 11, 2015 luncheon.  E-mail president@kcpaonline.org with the number of ladybugs you find. Let’s see how many you can find!

Thank you for a wonderful year!
-Makala E. Reha, ACP
